A LITTLE ABOUT THE LITTLES
Here is a little history about some lesser known dishes. We know you love Pho, but have you tried Shaken Beef (Bo Luc Lac), Grilled Pork/Chicken Vermicelli, Banh Mi, or Spring Rolls yet?
Shaken Beef (Bo Luc Lac)
Perhaps the second most well-known Vietnamese dish is Bo Luc Lac, otherwise known as Shaking Beef. Cubed then sauteed in onion, pepper, and soy sauce, this French inspired dish was considered a luxury because of how expensive beef used to be. In case you were wondering about how this dish came about its name, Shaking Beef is rightly named so, as it refers to part of the cooking process in which the beef is vigorously shaken and coated in an aromatic marinade then enjoyed by itself or with white rice.
GRILLED PORK VerMICelli (Bun Thit Nuong)
Thit Nuong is translated to grilled or barbequed meat, and it is usually pork that is associated with this dish. Bun means rice noodles, so you guessed it! This sweet and savory noodle dish is quite the opposite of pho, which is hot, soupy, and comforting. Bun Thit Nuong, although just as comforting and delicious, is a cold vermicelli dish that comes with hot, savory grilled pork, assorted mints, bean sprouts, shrimp, and topped with an egg roll. Sounds almost like goi cuon in a bowl, doesn’t it?
SPRING ROLLS (Goi Cuon)
Spring Rolls, or Goi Cuon as we call them, have been a lesser known dish for some time, but recently, it has started to gain some popularity. Made with fresh vermicelli and savory grilled pork rolled into a sheet of chewy rice paper, this dish is best served with a peanut sauce. If you prefer a little kick, try a spoonful of chili sauce added to your sauce to take it to the next level!
